Data basis

Official dates, derived planning view

Public holidays are based on Swiss holiday rules and statutory source context. School holidays use official EDK calendar data where available; the planner turns those dates into a practical leave overview.

Plan holidays and annual leave in Switzerland 2020

The holiday planner combines Swiss public holidays, regional holidays, school holidays and your selected vacation days in one year view. A useful free-day block is rarely just one date: it depends on the canton, the surrounding weekends, school calendars, travel demand and how many vacation days you can realistically use.

Start with the canton if regional holidays or school holidays matter for your household. Then compare the full year before choosing single days. New Year's Day, Epiphany, May holidays, Ascension, Corpus Christi, National Day and the Christmas period can create very different blocks depending on the weekday.

For family planning, check the school holiday overview. For project work, payroll periods or quarterly planning, use the calendar weeks overview next to the holiday planner. Once the block is clear, share, export or subscribe to keep it visible.

Free-day windows worth checking first:

  • Ascension and Corpus Christi: Ascension always falls on a Thursday, and Corpus Christi does too in cantons where it is observed. A Friday vacation day can turn the week into a four-day block.
  • Christmas and New Year: Christmas Day, Saint Stephen's Day where observed, New Year's Day and nearby weekends often create the longest winter blocks with comparatively few vacation days.
  • Swiss National Day and cantonal holidays: The 1 August holiday is national, while many other useful planning dates are cantonal. The canton filter shows whether a date actually changes the working week.
  • Easter and Pentecost: Easter Monday and Whit Monday can extend spring weekends depending on local practice. Nearby school holidays often decide whether the block is useful for families.

Avoid generic answers

Regional holidays and school holidays can change the practical result. Switzerland-wide answers are not always precise enough.

FAQ

Common questions about the holiday planner

Short answers for free-day blocks, cantons and school-holiday context.

How do I find useful free-day blocks?

Compare the whole year first, then mark individual working days. A single Friday can be enough for a long weekend, while Christmas or New Year often needs several coordinated days.

Why should I select a canton?

Some holidays and many school holidays differ by canton. Selecting a canton makes the result more useful for families, teams and regional travel planning.

Are school holidays the same as vacation days?

No. School holidays affect school schedules and family planning, but they do not automatically create leave from work. Employment rules depend on your job, contract and workplace.
