Nationwide federal holiday in all 26 cantons under Article 110(3) of the Federal Constitution.
Swiss National Day on 1 August is the only holiday with federal constitutional status. Switzerland's other public holidays are determined by the cantons.
The Saturday date creates no additional weekday off in 2026; any compensation depends on the employment contract, collective agreement and workplace rule.
Swiss National Day is not simply another cantonal holiday. Article 110 paragraph 3 of the Federal Constitution gives 1 August its special status; other holidays are generally shaped by cantons and municipalities.
