Easter Monday: Canton-wide in Zurich, Bern, Lucerne, Uri, Schwyz, Obwalden, Nidwalden, Glarus, Zug, Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, Schaffhausen, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden, St Gallen, Graubünden, Thurgau, Ticino, Vaud, Valais, Geneva and Jura. In Fribourg it applies in Courgevaux, Fräschels, Greng, Kerzers, Meyriez, Muntelier, Murten, Ried bei Kerzers, Ulmiz and Mont-Vully, plus Flamatt and Sensebrügg. In Aargau it applies in the districts of Aarau, Baden, Brugg, Kulm, Lenzburg and Zofingen, plus Kaiseraugst, Magden, Möhlin, Olsberg, Rheinfelden, Wallbach, Zeiningen and Zuzgen. In Solothurn, Monday is not part of this canton-wide scope; a municipality may separately designate an additional municipal rest day.

Only Swiss National Day on 1 August has federal constitutional holiday status. Easter Monday rests on cantonal holiday rules.

Monday extends the weekend only within the stated scope; in Neuchâtel, Catholic Fribourg and the remaining Aargau municipalities, 6 April may be a regular working day. Solothurn's Rest Days Act allows municipalities to designate additional municipal rest days, so the municipality controls planning for the exact address.

Easter Monday can look like one uniform return day on the calendar. In practice, the Easter weekend ends differently by canton, municipality and school location; that final check prevents a mistaken day off.

Easter Monday extends Easter for many cantons and families, but it is not regulated everywhere in the same way. Its practical value comes from canton, school breaks and return travel.

For families, Monday is often the last shared day of the break. The home school, the parents' workplace and the destination municipality can use different calendars. Anyone returning on Monday evening should compare the local scope before booking.

In Neuchâtel and in unlisted areas of Fribourg or Aargau, 6 April can therefore be a normal working day.

Shops, pharmacies, restaurants and transport also use their own holiday or Sunday schedules. Anyone shopping or travelling on Monday should check the provider instead of inferring opening hours from the cantonal status alone.

Easter Monday applies at the workplace only within the stated cantonal or local scope. Care, transport, hospitality and childcare services may still use their own staffing arrangements.

The school location may already be in its Easter break even when a parent's workplace has no statutory holiday on 6 April. School and work calendars therefore need separate checks.

For shops, pharmacies and services, the provider's published hours decide the practical answer. A public holiday in a canton is not a promise that every branch opens or closes in the same way.

The 22 canton-wide areas must be distinguished from the expressly listed parts of Fribourg and Aargau. A place outside those lists may follow a normal working-day calendar on Monday.

Solothurn adds the municipal level: cantonal law can allow a local rest day without making Easter Monday a uniform statutory holiday across the canton.

Anyone travelling between home, workplace and holiday destination should assign each address separately. A neighbouring municipality or the same district is not enough evidence of the same holiday effect.

For Tuesday, 7 April, school return, work restart and the journey home are separate questions. A Monday off extends the break only where the local rule actually applies.

When booking the transition into the week, check opening hours, transport and childcare for Tuesday as well. That turns the holiday into a reliable Easter break rather than a calendar assumption.

On Easter Monday, the address decides: 22 cantons and the listed local areas are off, while Neuchâtel does not treat it as a statutory holiday.

For the return journey and the following Tuesday, check school holidays, workplace location and traffic separately; only then is the Easter break reliable.
