Only Swiss National Day on 1 August has federal constitutional holiday status. Ascension Day applies in every canton through cantonal rules.

Approved leave on Friday, 15 May creates a four-day break; without leave, the normal workplace and school rules apply on Friday.

Legally, 14 May is a public holiday in every canton; that does not make 15 May an automatic day off for employees or schools. Shops and services may use holiday hours on Thursday, while Friday will often return to the normal weekly schedule.

Ascension Day falls on 14 May 2026 and is observed in all 26 cantons. That nationwide effect is still different from the federal constitutional status of Swiss National Day.

For rest-day arrangements and concrete entitlements, the rule of the canton and workplace matters. The holiday name alone does not replace a cantonal check or a review of the roster and collective agreement.

At the workplace, Ascension Day generally means a public-holiday rest day. On-call services, care, transport, hotels and restaurants may use special staffing and should confirm their roster before the long weekend.

Shops and services also do not follow one nationwide Thursday timetable. Anyone needing supplies or an appointment should check the specific provider instead of inferring hours from the nationwide scope.

Friday, 15 May is a normal working day after Ascension Day. Approved leave creates the four-day break; without leave, rosters, classes and childcare follow an ordinary Friday.

Shops, counters and service providers may return to their usual Friday hours, although holiday-season operations or local planning can differ. The published time for the actual provider remains decisive.

Ascension falls on Thursday in 2026. A free Friday is therefore a specific bridge-day decision, not part of the statutory holiday.

Check school calendars, excursion traffic and the Monday return together before turning Thursday into a long weekend.

Because Ascension Day always falls on Thursday, the following Friday is the natural bridge day. Friday is not itself a public holiday.

Thursday travellers meet excursion traffic and regional events. Mountain railways, museums, restaurants and school routes follow their own holiday or school-break timetables; Friday can return to the normal commuter rhythm.

Do essential shopping before Thursday where possible. Opening hours for shops, pharmacies and leisure venues are an operating decision and cannot be inferred from the canton-wide holiday scope alone.

The canton-wide holiday scope helps with Thursday. It says nothing about whether Friday is free.

The feast commemorates Christ's ascension. Services and processions remain part of the observance, while many people use the spring day for outings.
